The five incoming members of WEAC Region10/Retired Executive Committee had the privilege of an invitation to actively participate in The WEAC Summer Leadership Academy (SLA) held August 2 – 5, 2015 on the campus of UW-Whitewater. The format was a bit different than past Summer Academies. It embarked on a shift in focus, emphasized by WEAC, to provide more in-depth leadership experiences for all members. It utilized the “train the trainer” model, with the ultimate goal of helping cultivate the next generation of union-led professionals through the development of building and developing effective teams. Teams of active members, including the new Region 10 Executive committee, were part of the nearly 60 participants.
The 4-day training emphasized active involvement in six Training Session experiences exploring the modules of the NEA Leadership Competencies. These leadership competencies included Advocacy; Business Practices; Communication; Governance & Leadership; Leading Our Professions; and Organizing. Each Training Session was two hours in length, allowing for the trainers/mentors to explore in-depth topics. There were many opportunities for networking/sharing among the active and retired members, along with time for Q & A. The SLA participants, including the incoming WEAC Region 10/Retired Executive Committee were provided built-in time to analyze, develop, and begin preparations for goals to be accomplished over the course of the year ahead.
Scattered within the framework of this Leadership Academy was a social/dinner sponsored by WEA Member Benefits on Day 1. This was followed by a motivational Keynote Speaker, Randy Fox, who gave a riveting presentation on “The Leader Worth Following.” On Day 3, a dinner & social was sponsored by WEA Trust Insurance, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Earl Wiman, member of the NEA Executive Committee. Earl also gave a Keynote Address at the Closing Session of the Summer Leadership Academy. Information gained at this Summer Leadership Academy will prove beneficial to the Region 10/Retired Executive Committee in the year(s) ahead.
